with the spirit of practicing my french, one night, when i was jumping from one channel to the other, i dropped by at tv5.
actually i felt
a bit useless because i could understand maybe only 30% of it.
mais ça m'est égal.

it was
a quiz program.
question: which countries have boundary with 2 oceans?
answer: canada, usa, mexico, panama, indonesia, australia, and south africa.

the question
excited me so much because:
i could understand!!
i could answer the question!!

i think it's
the first time in my life to have a great time with tv5. i'll visit you again sometimes, tv5.
á bientot.

when people usually have soundtrack everytime they're on travelling, i usually carry around books to read. maybe because i travel mostly alone.
here are some books that i
kept as company during the trips i made last year:

singapore (february): the twentieth wife - indu sundaresan
kuala lumpur (april): the miracle life of edgar mint - brady udall
karimunjawa (may): the shadow of the wind - carlos luiz zafon
umrah + cairo (june): kafka on the shore - haruki murakami
vietnam (july): hundred shade of whites - preethi nair
vietnam (september): the house of blue mangoes - david davidar
kuala lumpur (october): march - geraldine brooks
lombok (october): orang indonesia dan orang prancis - bernard dorléans
sumatra (december): second glance - jodi picoult

i believe beside the stories inside the book, usually i got stories outside the book like, "i read that while waiting for my delayed airplane in da nang."
or "i almost left this book at tanjung mas. luckily a friend found it."
or "this one is drenched because of the rain for the whole day in bandung."

It's a story of a wealthy family, who lost everything and the one son who had no choice, but to keep them all together.

kinda late, i'm watching arrested development now *after adhit recommended me this serial*.
so far, i'm still in
season 2.

the first time i saw
the trailer in star world, i wasn't interested at all. but after i gave the second chance, i found the serial is hillarious, smart, bizarre and different .

in case you didn't know, it's about a
dysfunctional rich family who lost everything after their dad went to prison because of cheating the government.
dysfunctional family is like the family in little miss sunshine, so just imagine if little miss sunshine is
made into a serial.

arrested development
won many awards including emmy and golden globe awards, but too bad, after season 3, it's cancelled because of the low rating.

i finally watched babel last week.
some people said the movie is good but the others don't like it, so i need to prove it .
babel, the title of the movie is from bible's story: about people who built tower to reach heaven. god was angry and scattered the people to live all over the world and speak different language so they can't continue building the tower *cmiiw*.

the movie is divided into 3 stories, set in morocco, japan, mexico, & us. and of course each story has different languages.
each story has relation to each other like chunking express or berbagi suami.
i just realized babel, chungking express, and berbagi suami has similar style of poster .
some people compare this movie to crash, but i still like crash better.

after a dissapoinment moment of my brother came back from india without any book for me , yesterday a friend came from india with some books for me .
here are
the books:

on beauty - zadie smith
i fell in love with zadie smith's white teeth *thx to darwin for sending me the book*. after reading the review about on beauty as one of the best book in 2005, i put it in my wish list right away!
i hope this is would be
as good as white teeth because i hate the autograph man.

perfume-the story of a murderer - patrick suskind
i know this is old *iman keep recommending me this book* and it's even already made into a movie, but i was planning to read the original german version (belagu banget yah).
but since i
don't know where to buy the german version, i ended up didn't buy at all until yesterday.

anyway... anyway...
yesterday, i talked to my friend's husband who is
an indian. i told him i've been living in jakarta, bandung, and bali. then he said, "so you have lived in 3 best places in indonesia!"
damn! he was
so right . i just never realized it before.

some weird things we found during the trip:
perkedel jagung as gorengan in padang.
it's yummy! they should do it here in jakarta too...

  babi dipasung in samosir.
is he naughty? or just ready to be eaten?
angkot jurusan caheum-ledeng in samosir.
even the plat number is still D!

  what-so-called road in samosir
foodstall in medan.
we didn't eat kodok, ular, burung, or biawak goreng...

we were in bukittinggi, waiting for our bus to prapat when we met this boy, who was waiting for his bus to jakarta. he was totally alone, looks so young and even looks younger because he was reading bobo.

me: how long does it take from here to jakarta?
him: don't know
me: is it your first time?
him: no, my second time, but my first time was when i was 4 years-old.

our buses were
desperately late, but it was fun to know him. we played card together, and it was my lucky day, so i kept winning .
finally his bus came and he left.
this is one thing about traveling i love. you just
accidentally met new people.
it was nice to know him. too bad i didn't take his picture.

after the trip with an extrem limit of padang food and batak music. here is some stuffs to share...

bukittinggi & padang
padang was not too interesting for me. we were there for only a couple of hours before we continued the journey to bukittinggi.

bukittinggi is clean, beautiful, and cold.
the city is full of
dutch colonial buildings with most of tourism places are well maintenance . it's easy to get around and people are friendly to show you directions.
the only pissed off thing was when we couldn't get bus to prapat (the port city to samosir). it was
hi season, all buses were departed from padang and they were full. we finally took travel but stranded in padang sidempuan for a couple of hours before reached prapat.

samosir island
lake toba is one of the biggest lake on earth, created by volcanic eruption.
i never know before that it's about
900m above sea level so the temperature around the lake is COLD!!
we crossed the lake to get to samosir island. most hotels are in a place called
tuk tuk. there several tiny villages scattered on the island and some people still do living in the traditional house!

we
explored the island: around the water, up on the mountain until we realized that we were lost in the forest up on the mountain. it was extremly cold, no one around, it started to rain, and like in horror movie, we were surrounded by fog .
we had a handmade map from hotel but it wasn't really helpful at all. we found so many
intersection roads with no signage (it wasn't really road just someone has been there and created a gap between the woods).
finally we met one person that make sure that we were really lost and instead of getting closer to tuk tuk, we
took the wrong way!!
